How to Calculate Ready Mix Concrete Requirements for Your Project
Accurate concrete quantity estimation is crucial for project planning and budgeting. Here's how to calculate your RMC requirements.
Basic Formula
Volume = Length × Width × Height
Result in cubic meters (m³)
Calculating for Different Elements
Slabs
Volume = Length × Width × Thickness
Example: 10m × 8m × 0.15m = 12 m³
For a typical residential slab:
- Living room (6m × 5m × 0.125m) = 3.75 m³
- Bedroom (4m × 4m × 0.125m) = 2.0 m³
- Kitchen (3m × 3m × 0.125m) = 1.125 m³
Columns
Volume = Cross-section area × Height × Number of columns
Example: 0.3m × 0.3m × 3m × 20 = 5.4 m³
Common column sizes:
- 230mm × 230mm - Residential
- 300mm × 300mm - Standard
- 450mm × 450mm - Heavy duty
Beams
Volume = Width × Depth × Length × Number of beams
Example: 0.23m × 0.45m × 4m × 10 = 4.14 m³
Footings
Volume = Length × Width × Depth
Add for each footing type
Example calculations:
- Isolated footing: 1.5m × 1.5m × 0.4m = 0.9 m³
- Strip footing: 0.6m × 20m × 0.3m = 3.6 m³
Important Considerations
Wastage Factor
Add 2-5% extra for:
- Spillage during pouring
- Over-excavation
- Uneven surfaces
Pump Concrete
If using pump concrete, inform the supplier as it affects:
- Mix design (smaller aggregates)
- Slump requirements
- Pricing
Pro Tips
- Always round up your estimates
- Order slightly more than calculated
- Plan for continuous pouring
- Consider access and placement time
- Discuss with your RMC supplier
Sample Project Calculation
For a two-bedroom house:
| Element | Calculation | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | 30m × 0.6m × 0.3m | 5.4 m³ |
| Columns | 12 × 0.09m² × 3m | 3.24 m³ |
| Beams | 50m × 0.23m × 0.35m | 4.025 m³ |
| Slab | 80m² × 0.125m | 10 m³ |
| Subtotal | 22.665 m³ | |
| Wastage (5%) | 1.133 m³ | |
| Total | 23.8 m³ |
